Drug Addiction is a Family Disease
One person may use, but the whole family suffers.
Drug Addiction is a chronic disease, which can be fatal if left untreated. Addiction and Alcoholism is a disease which simultaneously affects the mind and body. It’s referred to as an obsession of the mind and an allergy of the body. A person suffering from addiction has extreme obsessions about a specific drug or high. The cravings are so intense that they can’t resist the urges.
Most often though, the entire family usually contributes to the continuation of the disease. It’s easy to blame the person who is an addict or alcoholic. Honestly family members find it hard to say “no”, a boundary that addicts and alcoholics need desperately.
Unfortunately addicts and alcoholics are extremely manipulative and convincing, especially when they lie with a straight face. Usually the addict or alcoholic is very good at lying, and often, it’s impossible to know where we stand with them. This lying and manipulation hurts and confuses family who’s closest to them, and thus addiction becomes a disease that affects everybody attached to the addict. Most especially family.
Codependency
While it can be easy to blame the person who is an addict or alcoholic, family members often have a difficult time saying no. They may say they need money for food or bills, but you know they are actually using the money to purchase more drugs or alcohol.
Codependent relationships form with addicts and their families. The unhealthy dynamic develops resulting in resentment, disappointment and anger. Most often, family can’t understand why they cant or won’t stop using or drinking. Nothing you do seems to be good enough. Family will try exhaustively for years to offer help to the addict or alcoholic suffering, only to be rejected. All focus is on the addict and attention taken away from other important relationships in the family.
The stress that family members of addicts and alcoholics take on is huge. Constantly worried about where your addict is, and if they are alive. Long-term anxiety and stress can take its toll on a person’s physical and mental health. Severe stress, anxiety disorders and depression can develop from dealing with a family member who is an addict, as well. An addict doesn’t have a choice whether to use or not, just as you feel you don’t have a choice not to worry. Addiction removes all ability to control impulses, so the healthiest thing you can do for you and your family member is learn how and when to say “no”.
