Monday Morning Alcoholic?

The Southern Hemisphere welcomed Spring day on Saturday, 1st of September 2018.

It’s Monday morning. This is the tell tale day when problem drinkers emerge. Nursing a mother of all hangovers and behaving badly? Grumpy? Sick? Over-tired? Asking you or someone else to call in sick at work?

Red flag, there’s a problem here. What can you do? ⁉️

1. Comply – keep your alcoholic sick and enabling them. ✖️

2. Detach – allowing your alcoholic to experience his or her own consequences. ✔️

(I hope you choose to detach. You can love the person, but refuse to accept their behavior. There is no pain greater than to be helpless in the face of your loved ones suffering. Please remember, you aren’t alone in this predicament.)

You might want to ignore the problem and get on with your daily routine. But if you get home after work to find the house much the same as when you left, it’s okay to be angry. Direct your anger in a healthy and productive way. Set boundaries. I strongly urge you to get your alcoholic to a treatment Centre where there’s a medically supervised detox Programme.

If you have no luck and feel despondent or hopeless, the next thing to do is get support for yourself. There are people in the same situation as you, not coping because of alcohol. There’s support for you, people just like you who welcome and give you comfort. The Al-Anon family groups are relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength and hope in order to solve their common problems. They believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.

The only purpose of this support group is to help families of alcoholics.

Remember the three C’s

  1. You didn’t CAUSE it
  2. You can never CONTROL it
  3. There’s no CURE for it!
